That Night

“Everything’s all set,” Edward said, clapping his hands down on the array. Next to him, Alphonse did the same, identical determined looks on their faces.

It went perfectly at first, but then the colour of the reaction changed abruptly, and sparks flew around them, bursting out of the transmutation circle.

Ed could hear Al screaming, but in the backlit darkness, he could just barely see Al’s face, covered with tears, as it disappeared from view.

He felt excruciating pain radiating from his thigh, and when he looked down, his leg was missing.

It was the last thing he ever saw.
